Is the untold power of muscles serving as your body's armour?

Updated: Dec 3, 2023

  • Have you ever considered your muscles as the true defenders of your body?

  • Do they serve as the ultimate structural support, making you not only physically robust but also mentally resilient?

Our bodies are equipped with three incredible energy systems, each with unique strengths.

Honestly, I'm fascinated by training in the Phosphate system – the powerhouse designed for quick bursts of energy, high force, demanding 100% effort, and delivering 100% results.

But how can it benefit you? Let's explore our body's three energy systems: Phosphate, Lactate, and Aerobic to understand this better.

Understanding the Energy Systems: Your Body's Power Plant

Breaking it Down:

1. Phosphate System:

Characteristics: Quick burst of energy, high force, needs 100% effort for 100% results.

When it shines: Perfect for short, explosive activities like sprinting or crushing heavy weightlifting sessions.

2. Lactate System:

Characteristics: Supplies energy during intense, moderate-duration activities.

When it kicks in: Activated during high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or activities requiring sustained effort for several minutes.

3. Aerobic System:

Characteristics: Long-duration energy system, relies on oxygen for energy production.

When it engages: Think jogging, cycling, or any sustained, low to moderate-intensity exercises.

Using common sense, do you agree that you can either exert maximum effort quickly for a short duration or sustain a lower intensity for a longer period in any activity?

There are significant benefits to training in the Phosphate system.

It's designed for quick bursts of energy and high force. It's short, intense, and requires maximum effort – 100% effort for 100% results. After the first 10-15 seconds, you start pacing yourself and enter the next two energy systems.

Engaging in high-intensity physical activity in the Phosphate system triggers the body's "fight or flight" response – an evolutionary survival mechanism designed to prepare us for physical exertion or confrontation in the face of stress or danger.

During this response, hormones like epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, growth hormone, and endorphins are released. These hormones increase heart rate, blood flow, and energy availability to help us face the threat in front of us. They also enhance focus and provide an extra burst of energy to help us deal with the challenge, promoting resilience.

Once we overcome the challenge, hormones are released to reward us. Serotonin helps us feel happy and grateful for this life. Not only do we feel satisfied, but we also get a dopamine rush for pleasure and reward, a boost in endorphin levels that helps us fight pain, and an increase in Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which acts as a fertilizer for our brain, enabling clearer thinking.

Diving into the Unknown: My Half Marathon Experience

Now, here's a twist. I'm not a fan of running or any long-duration activity as I shared before, but curiosity led me to attempt a half marathon – a 21.5k run. I even managed to convince my husband to join this adventure! 😄

To be completely honest, the experience was nothing short of amazing. No overwhelming fatigue, no injuries – just a fantastic time overall.

The Big Question: Breaking Limits and Embracing the Journey

So, here's the big question: If you're armed with strong muscles, sturdy bones, resilient tendons and ligaments, and a tough, resilient mind, could you possibly participate and relish any event or activity without the fear of injuries?

The answer, my friends, seems to be a resounding YES! Strong muscles and mental resilience might just be the golden ticket, allowing you to conquer challenges and savor events without the need for exhaustive preparation.

In wrapping up, shall we celebrate the journey of sculpting powerhouse muscles, fostering a resilient mind, and discovering the superhero within you?

Could it be that whether you're inclined towards explosive bursts of energy, ensuring a stack of energy for daily tasks, or embracing the challenge of a surprise half marathon, your muscles and bones stand as your ultimate support system — the ultimate cheer squad, ready to make every moment brim with excitement and joy? 🎉✨

Here's to Your Strength, Resilience, and the Epic Journey Ahead! 🥂
